A guide to your Balboa Park, San Diego couples shoot

As a photographer who adores romantic movies like The Notebook, I had to show off Balboa Park in San Diego. I have photographed in many San Diego locations, but this one might take the cake. The beauty Balboa Park is simply unmatched with it’s historic architecture, greenhouse and romantic victorian pillars. Truly giving that Allie and Noah feel you’re dying for during your San Diego couples photos.

So, why choose Balboa Park for your San Diego engagement photos?

One of the main reasons I love this location for an engagement, proposal or just for fun San Diego couples photos is the variety of landscape it offers. The park is basically 4 parks in one place and gives a magical, romantic vibe in every corner! There is seriously no way to go wrong here! It is also such a fun and creative place to explore while we shoot together.

Another reason I would recommend a session here is the privacy from people. For example, the particular shoot featured in this blog was taken on one of the busiest days of the year in San Diego and we were still able to find many peaceful, quiet hideaways for them to just enjoy the shoot together. And really Balboa Park is not just for the pre wedding fun! I’m imagining the most beautiful bridal shoot here with you in your wedding attire, oh my gosh!

When is the best time to take couples photos here?

Personally I am always a sucker for sunrise or sunset sessions. This is almost always because you can get Balboa Park all to yourself and how magical is it to have such a beautiful scene all to yourself?! If you feel like you might be uncomfortable in front of the camera then I would suggest a sunrise session so I can help you feel comfortable without the presence of other people for you to think about! These times of day with also help with the heat if you choose to come in the summer. This session was taken in February which was perfect for flowy dresses and covering up, but in the summer you will definitely be battling the heat if you go mid day. I would aim for an hour before sunset or right when the sun comes up for a shoot that will be just so enjoyable!

While San Diego is especially known for its busy traffic, you should note that on holiday weekends (Memorial Day, Presidents Day, any cool holiday that makes you want to leave your city) parking is an absolute nightmare. Even on a Monday! I would 10/10 recommend going on a week day that is not a holiday weekend or, if you have to, ubering to a meeting spot like the Balboa Park Botanical Building!

My favorite Balboa Park scenery

Here is a list of my favorite places to explore within this stunning San Diego park:

  1. The Botanical Building – With it’s stunning architecture you HAVE to give this little oasis a visit. If you are hoping to go inside for photos definitely check to make sure it is open. During certain times and recently during construction it has been closed inside. However, the outside is just as stunning!

2. Spreckles Organ Pavilion – I imagine the most beautiful wedding photos within the pillars at this pavilion. It brings a classy, beautiful, editorial feel to your photos! It is also one of the best places for some space from people making the shoot feel completely your own.

3. Alcazar Garden – This location gives me Alice in Wonderland feels. The courtyard with beautiful flowers. The cutest little fountain. Not to mention stunning views of the California Tower.
